Apple pushes for the use of Anti-virus Softwares

The biggest advertising point of Apple’s Mac OS X is that they are immune to the virus that plagues the Windows operating system, but they have now announced the need for anti-virus software to ensure protection for Mac computers.

Though there are less viruses which infects computers with the Mac operating system, Apple is now encouraging the use of not just one but multiple anti-virus softwares in order to minimize security risks.

A statement written on Apple’s web site states:

“Apple encourages the widespread use of multiple antivirus utilities so that virus programmers have more than one application to circumvent, thus making the whole virus writing process more difficult.”

Apple’s recent announcement is a response to the increasing “RSPLUg” trojan that is often concealed as either a key generator or a software cracking tool. This trojan changes the system it infected and uses a DNS server which redirects users to other sites.

The following anti-virus softwares are recommended by Apple: Intego’s VirusBarrier X5; McAfee’s VirusScan for Mac; Symantec’s Norton Anti-Virus 11.

Mac OS X is still considered to provide better security that its Windows counterpart but one must remember that no system is perfect. The need for an anti-virus software by a Mac operating system just proves no operating system can be immune to malicious software attacks.
